Proposal for Color or Synesthesia

images

1. What is the overall theme – color or synesthesia?

The overall theme I chose to address for my project is synesthesia. I am going to combine the mixture of sound and taste.

2. What Ways of Knowing are you addressing besides Sense Perception?

I will be analyzing the data I receive and determine the reasoning behind participants answers and hopefully be able to recognize a trend in sounds in correlation to the types of food I give them.

3. To what Areas of Knowledge does your project relate?

My projects relates to the area of knowledge of human psychology and determining how many people answered with the answer they do and why they did so.

4. What is it exactly, you plan to do and/or investigate?

I am going to place earphones or somehow plug the participants ears so they can’t hear anything. I then will feed them certain foods and ask them what sound they hear while they were eating the food. I understand that I could have switched sound for color or texture.. (ect) but I figured to make the experiment less bias considering people are able to make recognitions to certain foods they taste to the color of the food or texture (ect) so I thought that sound would be the perfect option. I hopefully will find a similar trend with the participants.

5. What is your driving question?

How do we know what sound food makes when it makes no sound? Can it be possible and if so what past experiences cause is to here different sounds while eating different food?

6. How is your project inherently about knowledge/knowing?

I will be recording peoples answers by the food I give them and analyzing how certain foods can have a certain sound when giving it to them and what past experiences caused them to think that way.

7. What materials will you need?

I will need various samples of foods, participants, and ear plugs.

8. Who could assist you / mentor you on this project?

I feel that I could manage this project on my own and people will be willing to participate in my experiment.

9. How will you present the project to the class?

I will show the class the participants answers, their reasoning to why they choice the sounds they chose and determine if there was a trend in answers.

10. Projects are due the Cycle of March 1 – how do you plan to manage the time for this task?

I believe that I will be able to manage my time well during this time. I want 10 participants and throughout the week I will feed 5 different types of food to them and ask them what sound they here and why while eating the food.

Visual Perception 2 Part Augmented Reflection and Creation

After watching all the videos and tweeting in class (Storified Twitter Archives will be posted at the top ), peruse some or all of the accompanying articles within this blog post. **Be sure to read the questions in the TED ED lesson I created – you can easily incorporate them in your blog or vlog.

You are asked to complete 2 tasks:

I. A personal reflection of the issues addressed in the articles you read and the videos (use the tweetchat to help). Try to include questions about knowledge itself, and how our sense of sight both hinders and helps our pursuit of knowledge. Ask good questions (open-ended). You can compose your reflection in 2 ways:

b. a regular BLOG POST on your WordPress that includes hyperlinks to other sites, articles, and/or videos to further illustrate your points. For example, if you are discussing the BBC Science of Attraction video about profile photos, you could hyperlink to several examples.

The video called “Profile Photos” was very interesting to me because of the fact that these ideas and theories were extremely relatable to my modern life. The video explained how people are physically attracted to looks before personality and describes how it is different for different people. I believe that this is both true and false because some people only look at looks and physical appearances while other rather look at non physical things such as personality and interests. This is showed through many examples in my life for example boys often lie to girls and make their lives really interesting by saying how outgoing and mentioning all their sports to girls while girls often wear make-up and spend a lot of time on their clothing because they are trying to empress the opposite sex. A lot of times people represent their profile picture on online sites to things that they find appealing to the opposite sex for example a guy might post a picture of him working out or surfing (interests of him) and a girl might post a similar picture or a picture in her bathing suit which she feels would attract the opposite sex.

It is also talked about how there is a Halo Effect and how things get interpreted differently and the message is represent to others differently due to their personal experiences and personal interests. Also the way someone presents information even if it is the same information it will come across to people differently. This was done in an experiment when a boy recorded himself talking on an online dating site where he was to read a script. In one recording he read the script upbeat and happy while the other recording he read the script not happy and a little more careless. They found that the girls who watch the happy recording were willing to go on a date with him while majority of the girl who watched the less upbeat recording saw a lot of flaws when in reality he said the same things.

II. A REMIXED, AUGMENTED VIDEO based on Ben Beaton’s video: “The Key to Media’s Hidden Codes”. For this we’ll be using Mozilla Popcornmaker. Watch and do the interactive tutorial, then import the Beaton video in and start going. (see sample augmented video from Beau Lotto on blog post)

After an entire week of trying popcorn maker the website just doesn’t work on my laptop or my computer at home. Would I possibly be able to borrow a mac to complete this assignment?

For this I’d like you to try to find Symbolic Codes, Written Codes, and Tech Codes Jr. – you might even create your own (i.e. camera angles). Use all resources possible, as Popcornmaker pulls all types of media from all over the web.

Specs: Shoot for at least 10 augmentations of any sort..more is fine.
