TOK Presentation Planning Document

1.     What is the real life situation under consideration?

ethics- moral principles that govern a person’s or group’s behavior

moral- concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human character.

My question is determining whether the progress of history had made moral progress? I will be looking at memorable events in history which most commonly are wars or start  wars.

2.     What is the TOK knowledge issue(s) (questions) that will be the focus of your presentation?

Does History show we’ve made MORAL progress (ETHICS)?

3.     Write a summary in note form (like a bulleted list) of the way you plan to deal with the Group member:

Estimated Timing of Pres 10 minutes

Because I am in history it will be a little easier for me to examine the major events that occurred and triggered each other and then I will determine whether it is moral and ethical or not and determine if we have learned from our mistakes and showed progression morally. I feel that we have not  progressed morally due to war yet in some cases we have with slavery and prodigious although that still occurs in some areas till this day.

Topic (why is it significant?):

Essential Question:

This is significant to me because I am very interested in history and have been taking history since 9th grade. This question is also significant because we seem to be evolving and learning from our mistakes as time goes by (for example slavery and women’s right) although have we really made moral progression with all the wars and new weapons such as the atomic bombs and weapons that have been created?

a.     How will you identify the knowledge issue(s)?

I will identify the knowledge issues by doing research on the events of history and determine whether we made progress or not. It will be hard to come up with an answer because the topic is very controversial because in some areas there is much moral progression for example slavery yet in other areas such as newer weapons and atomic bombs we delincined morally.

b.     How will you show your personal perspective?

I will show personal perspective by acknowledging that I am from America and have a lot of knowledge from the American history and not as much from international history which both aspects need to be addressed. I will also show my personal perspective by announcing my opinion to the question of whether history has made moral progress ethically.

c.     How will you make connections to other Ways of Knowing or Areas of Knowledge?

I will make connections to other Ways of Knowing or Areas of Knowledge by understanding that there is a huge amount of reasoning when it comes to the wars that occurred throughout history. Possible allies, reasoning, moral decisions, geography, math and technology all played a major role the decisions made throughout history which can all be linked back to many other  Ways of Knowing and Areas of Knowledge.

d.     How will you examine the knowledge claims and possible counterclaims (i.e different perspectives)? Tip: ask yourself, what would someone who disagrees with the claim say, and what reasons would he give? What about someone from a different culture, age group, religion, class, educational background?

There are many possible counter claims that can occur especially with my topic. Due to the fact that I have an American perspective and even have a subconscious view that America makes all the right decisions when disagreeing with another country I may run into counter claims from people who are upset with Americas past actions and disagree completely with my point of view. I can also run into counterclaims when I decide on whether history is making moral progress or not.  I can make sure to examine the knowledge and claims by building up my argument from both sides and pretend that I am supporting both sides of the argument then make my decision after examining the facts.

e.     How will you examine the implications of knowledge?

f.      If there is bias, how will you examine that? What about assumptions and presuppositions?

When studying history there will be a lot of bias and assumptions when coming up with a conclusion because the major events in history are usually a group of countries against another group of countries or one country verses another. Although I keep talking about wars I also want to keep in mind ancient ways of punishment such as public hangings, ways of entertainment such as warriors fighting till the death, and just torture towards a “lower” race such as slavery. There is always bias when two different groups of people or two different disagree because there will always be three different stories what one side thinks, what the other sides thinks and the truth. I will examine this by building up my argument with both sides and then determining my answer to the question.

Burning House Project

  1. Pinky Pillows

The first thing I would even think to grab if my house was burning down would be my two pinky pillows.  When I was two years old my Nana bought my mom a pink bed set and it came with two pink pillow cases. I instantly became infatuated with those two pillow cases and have loved them since. As a child I would not be able to go to sleep without them and I became extremely protective of them; not allowing anyone to touch them or sleep with them. It was my favorite thing in the world and something I still find myself having a hard time sleeping without.

2. Purse

I would grab my Michael Kors purse because I just got it and I absolutely love it. It is the perfect size for all of my belongings and the perfect color of white to match every outfit. Considering my house burned down I don’t know how many things I could match it with although I absolutely love it. It is also my very first Michael kors purse that is extremely special to me because it was given to me as a gift by someone who is very special to me.

3. Fins

These or my new kicks fins that I recently received as a present by a very good friend because my old fins broke. I would take these fins because they represent my love for the ocean and my love for diving and doing ocean involved activities. I love the ocean and I feel that these fins are a good representation of myself and my love for the ocean which is why I would definitely take it with me if my house were to burn down.

4. Sunrise shells

I would also grab my four favorite sunrise shells because they are very valuable to me because I make shell jewelry. These shells are very rare in hawaii and very hard to come by unless you are willing to pay a lot of money. I got these shells for a very good deal and did not have to spend $100 like one usually has to.

5. Gold Bracelets

I would also grab my four favorite gold bracelets if I’m not already wearing them because each one is extremely special to me and each one has a very unique and special shell attached to them. The first gold bracelet I every got was made by my mom ,but the shell was found by me which is why it’s very important to me. The shell isn’t the easiest shell to find, but I was so excited when I found it and it always brings me back to diving with my dad all afternoon long. The next two bracelets I got as a surprise valentines day gift. These bracelets contained a white, fresh water pearl and a spotted flea cone with a heart charm. These two bracelets are very special to me because it was a start of me and my boyfriends relationship. The last bracelet was given to me by my brother. The shell is my most favorite shell, a miter shell which took my brother days and days to find for me for a birthday gift. It is very special to me because he went diving specifically to get me the shell because he new I wanted it.

6. Iphone

I would take my iphone because I would want to be able to stay in contact with my family, friends and the rest of the world so they know I’m okay and still aware of whats going on in the world.

7. A love story by af swim suit top

I would grab this swimsuit top because since my freshman year I have been wanting a bathing suit from a love story by af, but I never came up with enough money to actually get it until recently. I would be so sad if I finally got it but didn’t have the chance to wear it out in public.

8. Flower Haku

I would grab my floral haku because it is very special to me and my little sister bought it for me and it reminds me of her. She moved to Los Angles with her mother so I rarely get to see her, but when I look at my haku or wear it out it reminds me of her and makes me happy.

9. Picture

I would take this framed picture of me and my best friend because it is very important to me and it reminds me of all the memories we made together out at the sand bar. This picture is one of my favorite memories and I wouldn’t want to loose this photo for the world.

10. Laptop

Lastly, I would grab my laptop because it was very expensive and my family made a lot of sacrifices for me to get it for school purposes. I also really need my laptop for school work and would not get anything done in school without it.

Summer Assignment

  1. Curation of Knowledge issues- A Way of Knowing Emotion

This article was a powerpoint that a teacher created to present to her class about a way of knowing emotion. Emotion is a way of knowing, a physiological experience, a way to express behavior, directly affects a person through mood, reasoning and behavior.  An emotion everyone has is love, which there are many different types of. All emotions can be trained and controlled including love, which is extremely bizarre because a lot of times people feel they have no control over who they love and who they don’t, but humans to have the decision to love who they want whether they know it or not. Emotions almost always deceives people especially when it prevents someone from their objective or becomes an obstacle in human relations. Emotions often limit the ways of knowing because perception usually ends up being judge differently and lacks open mindedness. Many people misjudge the way emotion should be and see it as X makes me feel good. Therefore X must be good, but that is not always the case. Emotions are very important because it does help us in situations and allows us to be able to feel. Although emotions often hinder our knowledge for example if you don’t like someone you tend to focus on all the negative things about them rather than their possible positive qualities. Emotions also cause things to be biased and don’t allow someone to think clearly.

I have the augmented video lesson I want to talk about and have created notes where I am going to add text in popcorn maker it is just that popcorn maker is not working on my computer. Here is a link to the Ted Talk I will curate.
